Internal medicine is a broad specialty that encompasses diagnosis, treatment, and management of adult diseases that affect any system or part of the body. Internal medicine physicians are equipped to handle the whole health spectrum, from health promotion and prevention to chronic illness and complex disease. Additionally, internal medicine offers a wide range of subspecialties, including cardiology, oncology, hematology, pulmonary disease, and many others.
The Internal Medicine Interest Group (IMIG) at Keck provides students the opportunity to learn about internal medicine through a variety of sponsored events and networking opportunities. Each semester IMIG holds a series of lunchtime lectures where guest speakers and panels of physicians address current medical issues, describe their career pathway, and compare and contrast the many internal medicine subspecialties. Through IMIG students can attend internal medicine grand rounds at LAC+USC Hospital as well as shadow internists in the hospital setting. We recently developed a new shadowing program in partnership with the cardiac catheterization lab at LAC+USC where students can observe interventional cardiology procedures. Members can also participate in a mentorship program with attending IM physicians and attend hands-on simulation workshops that teach important procedures like a lumbar puncture. Through lectures, shadowing, mentorship, and workshops, we hope IMIG can support all medical students on their path to internal medicine in any way possible.
