Primary care remains the axle of any health care system, from which all other spokes radiate. As originally defined by the Institute of Medicine, primary care physicians (PCPs) provide continuous, comprehensive (across diseases, age, and gender), coordinated care which is cost effective and community based, also serving as the first point of contact for most health care needs.
